The Origin of Alaric Designer
Yet another brainchild of multi-talented Kerry Alaric Cheeseboro, ALARIC DESIGNER features original designs for fabric and various apparel.
The idea arose while Kerry was living in Barbados where the country, in 2021, celebrated their new freedoms by becoming a republic independent of British sovereignty. To commemorate the occasion, the Scottish Register of Tartans created and registered an official Barbados tartan design. However, as the Barbados island population is over 90% of African descent, much of it from Ghana, Kerry believed there must already be an official Barbados Kente cloth design, the Kente deriving originally as well from Ghana.
Finding no such official Barbados Kente design — there did exist template designs that just substituted the Barbados flag colors for the common African colors — Kerry took a day to design one himself, not only replacing the colors, but having every “grid” of the design represent something meaningful and relevant to both Barbados and the original spirit of Kente’s Ghanaian roots.
Posting the finished design of social media drew an unexpectedly huge and positive response, and within less than 24 hours, Kerry found himself on the national morning news show Mornin’ Barbados, talking about the design and its inspiration.
Over time, Kerry created other designs, using the Ghanaian design esthetics of his father’s side of the family as well as the Arapahoe tribe (and general Indigenous Peoples) art and visual symbology of his mother’s side of the family.
Those designs are now made available on a variety of everyday apparel on this website, and some designs are available for purchase on a variety of fabrics from his Alaric Designer Spoonflower store page.
Expect more designs to be added over time, additionally resulting in more fabrics and more apparel.
